The French educational system is composed of three “cycles” that are designed to honor students’ different developmental rhythms and to ensure educational continuity:
- In maternelle (K1 - K3, Cycle 1), students develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing, through participating in the study of integrated language and literature units. They discover the function of writing and start to produce their own. Attention is given to the acquisition of vocabulary, phonological awareness, and discovery of the alphabetic principles.
- As students progress through the program in Grades 1 - 3 (Cycle 2), student’s language skills are strengthened as students engage in literature-based units. We delve into communication that is based on living in society and student’s relationships. Again, the language is a pathway to exploring all other learning domains.
- In Grades 4 - 5 (Cycle 3), mastery of the language, written and oral, remains a central objective, which ensures all learners have the necessary reading, writing, and oral skills to continue their education.
